I might be in a minority of one, but I liked the Mk2As, with their winged seat backs, seats aligned with the windows which could be opened, and most had doors half way along the carriage which were convenient for taking the occasional photograph from.

Takes me back to when the Newcastle - Liverpool service was a proper train with a locomotive snorting away on the front and unpowered, relatively vibration free coaches*. Plenty of light, plenty of room and the ability to either have a conversation of listen to a personal stereo whithout having to increase the volume to unacceptably high levels.

Happy days indeed.

* until you hit a bit of jointed track at Mirfield that had badly dipped joints!
If I ain't here, I'm in Bilston, scoffing decent chips at last!!!!

Possiably due to my size (I'm 6'5") I found most the Mk2 seats rather uncomfortable. The other features that you mention though are sadly missed nowerdays.
Its good to know where you stand. Saves making a fool of yourself later......
