Login query

Post by Bryan »

Has anyone else had to keep re logging in?
Since the 1st of Jan when most websites required a refresh of the login details. I have had to re enter the login details on here about 3 times even when I have ticked the remember me box.
Last year I can't remember having to do this repeatedly.

Same here ( 'Famous last words' ? ).
Sorry Bryan and 52D.

Not a computer whizz-kid, but have you changed internet browser or Windows/Mac version lately? (Or there's possibly a querk of which of each of these already using?)

Or, of possible relevance ? ....
After I upgraded my vers. of Internet Explorer to IE8 about 6 months ago. This presented/caused no new problems with internet use, except that there was just one database/logging/forum website of which I am a member, and which had been trouble-free, that, although I could still 'non-member' browse okay, I was newly and unexpectedly, no longer able to log into at all - [after entering username and password, it just reverted to the previous page ('non-member'-browsable, but which included the link to the login page), acting as if I hadn't attempted to login and allowing non-member browsing to continue].
Then, in mid-Dec., the site's adminstrator had to take the site offline for a few days, apparently while it was re-configured, re-servered or some such, because the original became irrevocably affected by a virus.
The site was then restored (with a slightly revised url). ... : ... Suddenly, and still using IEB, unmodified, I was straight away able to login again - without problem !

I haven't had that many requests for new passwords, and they're usually from different people.

If it is a browser related problem, then try clearing out your cookies.

And do try to remember your password - this is by far the most common problem with people not being able to log in!

Remembered password OK just the bind of having to relogin a couple of times.
I have not changed anything at home or upgraded anything.

But opened up normally today.

That's your browser and cookie timeouts. There's a strong argument that that is the best way for it to work - short of asking for a login every day/visit.

From not having any problems.....

When I tried to log in just now,
the site claimed that I had used up all my login attempts  and had to complete a box with a captcha style confirmation code.

Odd, 'cos I didn't think I had been on here earlier this evening....

I have had to relogin a couple of times this week, odd because I just move off the site and do not log out.
I also make sure I tick the auto login button to remember me next time.

I had the same problem as StoneRoad this morning - number of entries exceeded, and now the "Quote" and URL buttons don't work.

I suspect most of these problems are operating system / browser / cookie related - and remember cookies expire on their own.

However over the past day I've had a couple of reports together, and I'm wondering if an automated system tried to crack passwords. This is a reminder to use a good password that can't be guessed. Guessable and dictionary words should not be used.
