Stock Orchard Sidings

Post by Marx »

Hi Folks,
Does anyone know if there was, at one time, a sidings off lower Holloway called Stock Orchard Sidings'?? I am looking at a 1930s map of the area. There appears to be a line coming off the Down slow next to a street called Stock Orchard...................
If so, I wonder if it served a coal yard?
The magnificent 'Copenhagen Fields' layout on youtube is well worth a view............

Cheers all

I reckon what you are looking at are Holloway Carriage Sidings, in 1956 a fan of 17 dead end sidings adjacent to Stock Orchard Crescent

...And, at the north end of Caledonian Road bridge over the main line at Holloway, the short dead-end side turning running N.E.-ish, parallel with the railway, was, and is (in 2009 A-to-Z), Stock Orchard Street: Along the east side of this street, the high boundary wall was the one of which a part formed the back wall the former Holloway South Down signal box, with an access door immediately adjacent.
At the end of the street, the wall turned 90 degrees left to head N.W., and had a brick arch-topped gateway through it into Holloway Carriage Sidings, inside which, IIRC, were one or two single-storey railway buildings. However by the late '60s, these may have been partly let out, as I seem to recall a sign at the gateway reading something like " Brost Forge Ltd.".

This immediate area is now occupied by an unusual-looking architect-designed several-storeyed dwelling, close to the lineside, constructed of various materials including one section looking as if built of sandbags; the whole being topped by what could be described as a small, square watchtower.
The 2009 A-to-Z now shows a road named Heddington Grove (off Stock Orchard Crescent) which appears to be on the site of the buffers stops end of the former carriage sidings.
