Sorry to post an obvious question, but would any records be retained by the NMR? I am trying to find out a little more (from a very low base) about my grandfather who was an engineer and who "died in harness" at the works in 1947. Not that I need a reason to go to York again, just an excuse!

The NRM might have employee information. Also the National Archives at Kew may be worth a look. (Kew also has a steam museum!)

Thanks for that. Both are good destinations. Not visited the Steam Museum at Kew for a long time. So that's at least 2 days research planned!

If you go to the Great Eastern Railway Society web site http://www.gersociety.org.uk you will find a link to Genealogy information.

Stratford Works was built by the GER.
