97 years ago yesterday on the Great Central Railway

Post by Rlangham »

Copied from the superb 'Small Town, Great War. Hucknall 1914-1918' facebook page which documents, as the name suggests, the history of Hucknall during the First World War and the men from Hucknall that served, comes this interesting snippet regarding an incident on the GCR in 1917;
“WOMAN SHUNTER’S MISHAP.

“The entrance of women into men’s occupations unfortunately brings with it those mishaps to which all employees are subject. On Monday night [8th October 1917], Sarah Ann Brownlow, 35, of 72, Orchard street, Hucknall, employed as a shunter by the Great Central Railway Company was run over by some waggons at Annesley sidings [pictured], and sustained a severe injury to the foot. She was removed to Nottingham by train, and conveyed in the motor ambulance to the General Hospital. It was found necessary to amputate a foot.”

‘Hucknall Dispatch’, 11th October 1917.

Nasty!. Being a shunter was always a dangerous job, many a shunter was 'caught between the buffers' down the years.
