My grandfather was an LNER driver on the London to Edinburgh route until he retired in the late 50’s.
As a young. kid I was taken to Gateshead sheds and into the footplate of the Silver Link as he took it onto the turntable, turned it around, back out and parked it.
His name was David Anderson, I remember a tale he told from the depression years when drivers used to stop trains, went into fields collecting vegetables that were shared out at the shed.
Has anyone else heard of this less than legal practice?
