Signalboxes disappearing

Post by Bryan »

It seems that 2 boxes have to added to the list of closed and demolished.
Horsforth and Rigton boxes both on the Leeds - Harrogate line and covering the lines to either end of Bramhope tunnel have both been closed and demolished over the last week.

Taken possession in both boxes over the years.

Listing means nothing other than an added bit of paperwork to deal with, especially if only grade 2 or lower. This might have the effect of deterring any work but do not rely on it.

Not to my knowledge: http://signalbox.org/last/listed.htm

An interesting loss from here was perhaps the mechanically-worked lifting barriers:

No immediate rush, it isn't scheduled to be abolished until 2015 - but if you have an interest in seeing the last hydraulically-worked level crossing gates in the country you will need to hurry, as these will be replaced in April 2013.

There are a number of s/boxes that have become 'listed buildings' around the country nowadays and at the time that they became listed buildings it probably seemed like a good idea but several years later when these s/boxes are left surrounded in an 'alien enviroment' of colour light signals, track rationalization and sometimes even overhead live wires that wasn't there when the s/box existed it all looks a bit 'out of place' in keeping with the original purpose of these structures.
I think it's still a good idea to keep them. Applying the logic that they can be disposed of because they now sit in an 'alien environment', doesn't really wash. If that were the case we wouldn't have any castles, georgian houses, or anything much over a hundred years old. Let 'em stand.

I wonder if it's simply down to a case that if left there might be the worry of vandalism if left abandoned.

Very good point. I suppose that, unlike castles, which were built with such solidity that they're pretty difficult to vandalise to much degree, signalboxes are an easy target for the brain-dead. I'm not sure there is any way to prevent vandalism. What a world.

Going to Caistor tomorrow so I will definitely take the Brigg route and stop to snap the gates and signal box together

How many Hydralic worked Level Crossings were there on the LNER? I only know of two, Walton Street Hull, the first instalation of summer 1934 and pressumably, the first to go in early December 1963. The other was Lincoln, instalation date unkown to me, replaced a few years ago. Walton Street was the first UK instalation of road traffic lights at a railway level crossing. Mick.
