Wimington East SB

Can anyone with any knowledge of the Hull area, advise the purpose of Wilmington East SB, which was situated between Wilmington Junction Box and Stoneferry Box (Chamberlain Road) on the Hornsea Branch. I have a feeling that it may have served a connection into a factory siding in the that area. Also, on Cleveland Street, Hull there existed for many years the remains of bridge abutments on this road situated between the Wilmington (NER) line bridge and the H&BR bridge; I understand that this was constructed for a link line between the NER and H&BR lines durng WorldWar2, in case enemy action disrupted one of the routes. I have scoured my Hull railway history books but can find no reference to it, was it ever built / used.

Mick Nicholson is the man to answer your questions accurately, he sometimes posts on this forum.

However, re the connection between the Victoria Dock branch & the H&B, it appears on this map (top left) -

I wonder if the SB you refer to gave access to BOCM? All along the river bank there were various factories & I am pretty certain that the aforementioned factory had rail connections ( it boasted a very early IC engined shunter).

Thanks for that information. I did find one map which showed the line running from the H&BR line (shown on your map) to a private siding labelled, British Extract Company Siding. Many thanks for your help.

Prior to Wilmington East being built there was an all wood box Wilmington Inner Jct, exact opening date unknown, but a photograph exists in Vol1 of The Hull & Barnsley Rly. A new frame (T11, W8, S3) was installed 1897. The box just visable in the attached photo appears to be pre 1903 design, I know of no other pictures.
Additional Trailing Mains X Over brought into use 8th Sept 1908. 30th March 1909 Garden Village Ground Frame and new Up Siding. Locking frame extended by one lever, now T12 S Nil.
1914 27 lever No16 App installed, W24, S3. When seen 5th October 1923, X Over and Up Sdg dispensed with, levers still in interlocking. Pressumably construction of Garden Village long finished and connection no longer required.
Sun 22 Sept 1956, Down Sdg, Mains X Over and all associated signalling dispensed with.
2nd January 1960, signal box closed.
I believe, that at least in later years, the surviving siding was used by a scrap metal merchant.
The connection between the H&B and NE is a completly different story. Best Wishes, Mick.

Having studied the local railway for best part of 50 years, I supose it is fair to say I have picked up a bit of knowledge, but of course not without the help and interest of several others.
You mention the other bridge across Stoneferry. Originaly it was to be part of the propsed 1885 connection between the two railways but was abandond pretty late on. Eventualy with the coming of what would later be BOCM the formation was reused and a Single Line connection laid in from Burliegh Street signal box. Burliegh Street box is the one seen on the embankment in the earlier submitted photo.

Thanks for that Mick. If i was still in the area, i would certainly be coming to your talk. Hope all goes well. The track diagram for Wilmington East you kindly sent shows a level crossing, do you know if this was a public road ?

From what little I recall of the area (I'm West Hull) it was no more than a "Dirt Track", but nevertheless may well have been a public right of way. Suggest you look up one of the "Old Map" sites. If you discover anything more, I would be pleased to hear about it. Mick.

A connection between the H&B and the NE is shown on the Hull Blitz map (plenty there on Hull railway yards,sidings etc never realised there were so many).Is this the one proposed?

The one you show is the 1916 railway, and it was indeed laid on the formation of the proposed 1885 connection between the two railways.
It was as late as 1913/14 before the two railways finaly became properly connected, when in west Hull a connection was made from Liver[pool Street (HB) to the NE, and in east Hull from Bridges Jct to Southcoates Lane NE. Oweing to the Great War and then Grouping both had a short life, though Bridges Junction was eventualy reinstated and now as plain line forms part of the route to KGD. Mick.
