Please could someone point me in the right direction with this problem.

I am interested in finding photographs, or any other other graphic, which indicate the type of station signage used on the platforms at York Station when the station was first opened or more likely in a few decades after that.

I can visit the NRM library and ask the same question there, but I wondered if there was an on-line source that might help with this.

The HMRS have published an NER livery register in three vols which I am sure would answer your query, certainly as to style if not for York specifically. You would find these in the NRM library or through your own local library interlending service.

From photographs the majority of signs at York were rectangular, almost certainly wood with metal letters and had pointing "hands" angled to the platforms to which they referred. No idea on livery though.
Edit* I used to have a colourised postcard of York station and I still have a scan which looks as though they were a red/reddish brown colour with white letters.
