Hertford East shed

Post by locojoe »

I'm trying to remember whether or not Hertford East shed had a Turntable and if so I suppose it would have been manually operated.

Yes it did but it was removed around 1955 when the shed end wall was taken out to make a through road.

It was a 44' 6" job, worked by hand. It was also locked by the signalbox because those pushing came too close to the up line thus releasing the table locked the signals on the up.

Hertford Shed is covered in "Great Eastern Railway Engines Sheds, Part 1 Stratford, Peterborough & Norwich Districts" by Chris Hawkins and George Reeve. (Wild Swan Publications ISBN 0906867401 dated 1986), including three photos and a track plan of the shed, yard and station dated 1954.

"...............1858....probably around this time a replacement two road shed appeared.......direct access from a 42ft turntable ........... replaced by a redundant table from Stratford of 45ft in 1891 and the shed extended by 45ft to the east.............1952/5.......turntable removed northernmost road was led through the building..........."

Whilst not anything to do with Hertford - but turntables, the one at Ferme Park is still in situ although somewhat rusted in place. It's the last one I can think of still in position on the area. I have some photos which I will look up later..

Read I think in the latest Steam Railway that the Ferme Park turntable has been moved for further use at Klondyke Yard York since the Engineers triangle is being removed.

It's certainly seeing some mileage if it does go to York - it came to Ferme Park from Cleethorpes sidings.

Thanks chaps for your replies.
I worked a Enfield Shed and sometimes worked on Hertford East runs using Stratford based L1s.
The reason I asked was I do remember pushing a manual turntable somewhere but I could not think Where. If an Enfield N7 needed turning we used the triangle at South Tottenham.
