Great news! The line was still intact in 1980 http://www.flickr.com/photos/pinzac55/3591449319/ and British Rail (and their successors) should have been compelled to give the lines away to anyone who would run them.

One of the more baffling closures of the Beeching era, as were many of the 'main line' closures.
It was also a tragedy that the line remained open for freight as late as 1980 but was dismantled before the preservation society was formed.
Got to say that Louth had a fantastic station building.
I am pretty sure that if Louth was still part of national rail network it would be a well used station.

Does anyone have a full map of the original route?

It was not really a baffling closure. It was killed because of all the level crossing and the high staffing costs. Looking at the emerging census data with lots of growth to the east of the ECML it does really looks like a mistake now, but unlikely to get reinstated.

And yet one of the reasons given for closing Spalding - Boston was that it was "mainly used by summer excursion trains" but , having closed it, they set about improving the Boston - Skegness road which was of course mainly used by summer excursion traffic.According to Disused Stations.org http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/l/louth/index.shtml "After closure British Rail lifted the track and ballast in 1981 and demolished all the buildings (except Louth itself which was listed) in order to deter the preservationists."

Boston - Skegness never closed - it is the bit that survived. Werrington - Spalding did close but was re-opened quite quickly with money fron Lincolnshire County Council (God bless them) BUT March - Spalding declined in freight use was finally completely closed in 1982, with the Lincoln Avoiding Line closed in 1983.

So now with large sum of money being spent on the Joint line to make it fit for heavy axle loads and containers to take the slow (75 mph) traffic off the ECML and yet more (see HLOS published on Monday) is planned for grade separation at Peterborough what price these two sections of line now! Thank goodness the Joint line survived - it was one of the next ones on the list, but Settle - Carlisle spoiilt the closure brigade's party by making it too difficult!! And now no-one even goes near a formal station closure (Look at Norton Bridge unusable but still legally open!)
