Middle Drove to Magdalen Road.

Post by nicola »

Hi everyone. I am probably in the wrong place entirely but I've searched the web with a fine tooth comb and have found nothing! I REALLY need some info and pics of the line that ran between Magdalen Rd and Middle Drove and more importantly the gate keepers house that existed there. Any information will be greatly appreciated. I know it's probably a long shot! I am hoping to put something together for a dear family friend, who turns 93 next month, and who spent her young life in that house when her mother was infact the gate keeper (earning 2shillings 9pence a week) and her father worked the line. She would be blown away. So, as I said, anything you can give me would be fantastic. Thanks for your time, and if I am in the wrong place, so sorry :)

Hello Nicola,

You are not in the wrong place at all, but that particular railway was not photographed a great deal, so there may not be many to choose from.

However, these links may prove useful

And if you are quick, there is a postcard of Middle Drove for sale on Ebay here,

Search for Middle Drove on Flickr and you will get one or two results such as this:-

Hello Nicola,

The Great Eastern Journal (No 73), which is the journal of the Great Eastern Society, for January 1993 has a feature on Middle Drove station with photos and drawings.

If you contacted the society they might be able to assist you.

I have some S&T plans for Middle Drove and a box diagram for Maggie without the branch if they are of interest.

G'Day Gents

I read a book many years ago, written by a railwayman who worked at Magdalen Road, I think it was called 'Fen Railwayman' or something very similar, he mentioned many names of the people he worked with, I think the timeframe was 30's to the 50's, you could try your local library.
