The LNER Encyclopedia

How extensive were these on the LNER (& which constituents)? and what was the general configuration? Also livery details (LNER days & pre-group). Any pic's? Also wondering what models/kits might be available in OO/4mm scale? is it possible to do a conversion of the Hornby GWR models?

Otherwise the usual sources (RCTS/Yeadon) are useful.

The discussion in RCTS Vol10b is good on the use of the Sentinel railcars,the Armstrong Diesel Electrics, and on the proposals for a fleet of diesel mechanical cars based on the GWR prototypes in 1946/7. There is a very good posting on here (search for Proposed LNER Diesel Railcars) with drawings as to what these might have looked like.

There are also several other postings on here (including a picture of my scratchbuilt Dia89 articulated car) . You can search for 'Sentinel'.

You can search for 'push-pull', or look up locomotives like the G6

As for the push-pull sets, Kirk do a pretty good rendition of the driving trailerhttp://shop.cooper-craft.co.uk/product_ ... cts_id=164. Remember twin vac pipes as well as steam heat! As for the rest, ordinary suburban stock will do nicely. Again, probably the Ian Kirk coach for consistency's sake.

They will need decent wheels but do at least come with interior fittings, or at least the last ones I built did!

Also good article in British Railway Journal No. 32, Summer 1990, with useful follow-up replies in No. 35. Also an article on the GER Autotrains in Back Track Special Issue No. 2 LNER, 2001. GCR, GER and NER types used before and through Grouping, and LNER types all over the LNER system and into BR days. No special locomotives constructed for Auto-Train working, but various types adapted to do so.

GNR constructed 2 steam railcars (railmotors) in 1905, the first carriage design by Gresley for the company. Various other self-propelled vehicles used, including steam-powered units from Sentinel-Cammell and Clayton.

These tended to have special liveries, whereas ordinary P-P fitted carriages wore the livery of the relevant company for the period.

As to kits in 4mm, there was an Ian Kirk kit for the 4-compt Brake, as used on the Epping-Ongar and some other services, but Coopercraft is presently something of an unknown quantity. Another potential source is Bill Bedford (Mousa Models) for the GC railmotor, not sure what Dan Pinnock (D&S) is doing with the GE Auto-train set in 4mm, and there may be other sources.
