York turntable

Just passed through York on the train, and to the south of the station there's an excavated turntable well and roads leading off it (the brickwork anyway, no track from what I saw), does anyone know the story behind the turntable and why it's been excavated? Haven't seen it before.

Mallard was also partly sticking out of the NRM, the bogie first 2 or 4 driving wheels of it were outside with the door open from the storage area - is it off anywhere?
