Riccall Level Crossing Accident 1952

Post by delticfan »

Just researching a local event which took place on 16th July 1952, where unfortunately a car was hit at Riccall Gates Level Crossing south of York. The train involved was the 4.45pm Tees Tyne Pullman from King's Cross, hauled by an A4 loco. Can anyone shed any light as to the identity of the loco which was involved in this accident.

Hi,

I looked here:
http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/doclis ... earch=true

but nothing came up for that location. Maybe some of the locals on here with long memories will be able to help.

The report is there but does not record loco number.

My mistake. I searched 1962, not 1952. Sorry.

Yeadon's shows 60018 Sparrow Hawk at Doncaster for non-classified repair from 7th to 19th August 1952. Could this have been for repairs to frontal damage in the accident, it was a Gateshead engine at the time and could have been on the Tyne-Tees Pullman turn?

Thanks for the replies, all very interesting. I did check Yeadons myself but never picked up on Sparrowhawk, an interesting theory. I live close to Riccall but to be honest most people don't even realise that the railway passed through their village - how sad! I always think of A3's A4's etc when I drive along the the A19!
