A4s Naming

Post by 52D »

Below is a copy of a mail and a reply from another forum. Any comments why 60020 didnt get its planned name.

Original mail author

I have a copy of the Ian Allan 1948 Combined Volume (as reprinted in the late 1960s) and despite owning this tome for many years, I have just noticed that there are two A4s shown as carrying the following names - 60011 as Dominion of India and 60020 as Dominion of Pakistan.

This is a big surprise to me because I have never read anything anywhere about these renamings. Did they ever happen, or did Ian Allan "jump the gun" by publishing proposed renamings that were abandoned before they took place??

Hello

From the Green Guide:

In October 1947 it was announced that (600)11 was to be renamed as stated, and the engine carried new plates for about a week whilst in the paint shop, but went back to traffic with the original plates. (600)20 was to have been renamed also, but that never took place.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

Possibly to do with the breakdown in India - Pakistan relations?

My 'asian' history isn't great, but I'm guessing this is from around the time when Britain gave up most of her colonies, including India.

G'Day Gents

I did see a picture of D of Pak, in a book many, many years ago, I think it was never named because Pakistan was talking about pulling out of the Commonwealth, but it never happened.
