The North Eastern Railway Magazine

Having a bit of a 'scan-a-thon' as i'm back at my parents for new year, so here's a couple of front covers from two issues of The North Eastern Railway Magazine. The first is from December 1914 and features an Armoured Car (most likely Rolls Royce, Talbot or Wolseley) as used by a Mr Hood, formerly of the NER, who has joined the NER and who pioneered armoured car work along with the Royal Naval Air Service in 1914. The second dates from 1917 and shows the typical cover which is a very nice illustration which I believe was first used on an advertising postcard showing the industrial strength of the North East pre-WW1

Interesting subjects for a railway magazine: allotments, poultry, bee-keeping. Was the magazine for staff or on sale to the general public? I like the front cover - has something of Lord Snooty about it

Hi Peter, I believe it was just for sale to the staff. One of the best regular sections is the brilliantly named 'North Eastern Railway League of Riflemen' - one way to deter fare evaders!

Ay up!
You have been busy, Richard. Many thanks - these are rather interesting. I do like the phonetic alphabet - pre UN I suspect!

Yes indeed, very interesting looking covers; thanks.
But, BB, I might be missing something obvious, but where is the alphabet you refer to? (And I've looked in on the 'electric edwardians' link, and searched 'alphabet' and 'phonetic', but no results.)

Hi Stevie, the phonetic alphabet is here - it's even different (mostly) from the sort used by the British in ww1, which didn't cover every letter either

Regarding the staff magazine, the first issue was in 1911.

Thanks v.m., Rlangham.
And apologies. Don't know how I missed reading your post in that thread.
