A4's in Apple green

How many A4's carried Apple Green livery and for how long?

Were there any variants to the front of the A4's being in black as I have seen in models?

Isn't that the A3 Flying Scotsman that you're referring to?

There aren't any A4'S in black at the moment as I'm aware of.

I'd have to say it's quite probable that one of the A4's will be painted wartime black with NE on the tender at some stage. I'd settle for seeing one with a single chimney in any colour.

I think it'd be neat if an A4 was painted in wartime black, or keep a running one in LNER blue.

The first four A4s introduced in 1935 were painted Silver. These were Silver Link, Silver King, Silver Fox and Quicksilver. The next batch built from Dec 36 were Apple Green and they continued to be turned out in Green until a decision was made to paint them blue.

I believe the green locos were the five in the Empire Series but running without names until June 1937:

4488 Union of South Africa
4489 Dominion of Canada
4490 Empire of India
4491 Commonwealth of Australia
4492 Dominion of New Zealand

In April 37 Woodcock was the first loco to be painted Garter Blue.

So their time in green may have been very short.

My reference is Yeadons Appendix 1. There may be better info in the A4 book by Yeadons. Perhaps someone else will confirm whether they ever carried names whilst painted green.

I'm working from the info found on http://www.sirnigelgresley.org.uk/frame.html - chime/archive/names & numbers on the left. This has "Golden Eagle" to "Sea Eagle " plus "Woodcock" & "Osprey" in green, with all but first one & last two looking like the photo found here: http://www.lner-encyclopedia.com/forums ... 3d48194472

The first batch of green ones initially had a straight vertical line between the black and green. The parabolic curve came later - this matches the Garter & BR Blue curve.

Incidentally, sorry for butting in to this thread but what colour scheme was the late Gadwall/Sir Ralph in when she was destroyed.

I think Gadwall/Sir Ralp was still in LNER Blue when she was destroyed as the photo of her wrecked on her right side clearly shows LNER on her tender instead of NE if she had already been painted black. I may be wrong though as it's hard to tell as the picture is black and white.
I think it would be great to see an A4 in apple green or wartime black, having seen the other liveries worn by the class in preservation it would be nice to do the rest.
I'm too young to have seen them even in BR days but I think Dominion of New Zealand looks a beauty in LNER Blue even more with the stainless steel letters and numbers.
Flying Scotsman suits the wartime livery very well makes the idea of a A4 in wartime black even more exciting.

Having seen Bittern painted up as 2509 Silver Link, I have to say she looked absolutely wonderful. That, plus the picture in LNER Reflections of 2509 leaving Kings Cross on the press run finally helped me to "get" the streamliners. I've been hooked ever since.

Wouldn't it be nice to seea silver 'un on the main line. With silver stock.

I'm off again.
