Peter Taylor's specialist subject on the 13th April was (drum-roll)...
The Locomotives of Sir Nigel Gresley!
A subject that forum members should do well at! Here are the questions:
1.) On what incline did Mallard set the world speed record for a steam locomotive?
2.) What was the name of 1470, Gresley's first Pacific, which emerged from Doncaster Works in 1922?
3.) Who retired as CME of the GNR in 1911 and was succeeded by Gresley?
4.) What name was given to the dome cover, housing a steam collector, which was fitted to Windsor Lad?
5.) What name, derived from the nickname of William the Conqueror's father, was given to the A3 4479?
6.) What musical nickname was given to the K3s, because of their syncopated exhaust beat and their uneven shuffling motion?
7.) Which Gresley locomotive was sent to the testing plant at Vitry sur Seine for extensive trials in 1934?
8.) In order to improve crew comfort, what was fitted to the K2 moguls transferred to Scotland for working on the West Highland line?
9.) In which city was A4 4469 Sir Ralph Wedgwood damaged beyond repair by a German bomb in April 1942?
10.) Gresley's giant Garrett was used as a banking engine up which incline near Barnsley?
11.) What type of valve gear, in which steam is admitted to and expelled from the cylinders by lifting valves, was fitted to the D49 "Hunts" and also to Cock o' the North?
12.) One of the two V2s named after schools was 4818 St Peter's School, York. What was the name of the other?
13.) What name was given to the valve gear, widely used by Gresley, in which the operation of the valves of the middle or inside cylinder was controlled by the outside cylinders?
14.) The "Kylchap" exhaust system, which was fitted to many large Gresley locomotives, takes its name from which two engineers?
15.) Which company did design work on the B17 "Sandringham" and built the first batch of ten?

How many of the questions/answers did the researchers get from this website then?

I don't know!
It would also be interesting to know how many were answered correctly. I got the questions from the
Gresley Observer, and it doesn't record how many he got right.
I think I did pretty well going through the questions. Virtually all of the ones that I would have been unsure of are, indeed, on the website. Some would have depended on the quizmaster's disgression - I think I would have answered the K4 question as "a better cab", but the answer recorded in the GO is more specific.

i gave it a bash and got questions 5, 10, 11, 12 & 14 as the only ones i couldn't answer. So does anyone know the answer to 10 and 14 as these were the only ones that i couldn't find the answers to.

As I have an issue of GO, I have the answers printed out
I'll wait a few days and not spoil everyone's fun.
I would have given (10) as "Wath" (it was known as "The Wath Banker") which is not the answer given.
I would have got half marks for (14) - the "-chap" is short for Chapelon - a star French locomotive designer. A contender for the title of the best steam locomotive designer in history and the writer of a classic text on steam locomotive design.

This is interesting because someone has just answered questions on Sir Nigel, and one of their questions was exactly the same.
What was more upsetting is that the contestant passed on the answer.

How did he do with respect to the other questions?
And who was it - anyone we might know? Eg. from the Gresley Society?

He was not very good. He only got 6 points.
I thought most of the questions were relatively easy.
When the programme appears on catch-up I will look at it again and let you know the questions and his name, if I can.

His was not a name I recognised and he did quite poorly. I reckon most of those on this forum would have managed 10 to 12.

Good morning all
Just crawled out after a late night.
What a great quiz!
I don't know Chapelon's partner for the Kylchap exhaust. I shall have to look that up. I would have had to pass the V2 name question as it took me a long while to work it out. I worked round all the towns in north Yorkshire area before spreading northwards.
Does anyone remember Chris Hughes, now of Eggheads, on Mastermind? He took steam locomotive subjects as his expert subjects was almost perfect.
Gotta go now and cook breakfast for my g/f.

The contestants name was Brian O'Donnell
The questions (some slightly cut short to save typing) were:-
H N Gresley was born in Jun 1876 in which city?
Which public school did Gresley attend before taking up an LNWR apprenticeship?
What is the name of the incline between Grantham and Peterborough where Mallard set a record speed for a steam locomotive?
Who joined Gresley as his technical assistant in 1912 and remained with Gresley until replacing Maunsell at the SR?
On which locomotives introduced in 1928 for the GE section was different from other Gresley designs - the outside cylinders drove the middle pair of wheels and the middle cylinder drove the leading pair?
In which town was the locomotive shed where Gresley worked as foreman in 1900? It was while he was there that he met his future wife.
What nickname was given to Gresley's experimental 4 cylinder 4-6-4 compound number 10000 completed in 1929 because it was designed and built in considerable secrecy?
Gresley opened discussions about building a train for the London - Newcastle service after travelling on a German diesel express train in 1934, what was the name of that train?
What name was transferred from the former NBR Atlantic and given to the first of Gresley's P2 Mikados No 2001?
What was the cylinder stroke of the 2-8-0s introduced in 1913 by Gresley for the GNR and classified as O1, and later O3 by the LNER?
The six P2 Mikados were designed for heavy express traffic between which two cities via Dundee?
What was the name of the Elizabethan mansion near St Albans that Gresley went to live in after the death of his wife in 1929?

Still sunny in Surrey
The second set of questions seem harder. I can guess where he was working when he met his wife. I don't know the house he lived in. Somewhere in the Hadley Wood area but don't know where.
Thanks for posting these questions
