Peter Taylor's specialist subject on the 13th April was (drum-roll)...

The Locomotives of Sir Nigel Gresley!

A subject that forum members should do well at! Here are the questions:

1.) On what incline did Mallard set the world speed record for a steam locomotive?

2.) What was the name of 1470, Gresley's first Pacific, which emerged from Doncaster Works in 1922?

3.) Who retired as CME of the GNR in 1911 and was succeeded by Gresley?

It would also be interesting to know how many were answered correctly. I got the questions from the Gresley Observer, and it doesn't record how many he got right.

I think I did pretty well going through the questions. Virtually all of the ones that I would have been unsure of are, indeed, on the website. Some would have depended on the quizmaster's disgression - I think I would have answered the K4 question as "a better cab", but the answer recorded in the GO is more specific.

i gave it a bash and got questions 5, 10, 11, 12 & 14 as the only ones i couldn't answer. So does anyone know the answer to 10 and 14 as these were the only ones that i couldn't find the answers to.

As I have an issue of GO, I have the answers printed out :-)
I'll wait a few days and not spoil everyone's fun.

I would have given (10) as "Wath" (it was known as "The Wath Banker") which is not the answer given.

I would have got half marks for (14) - the "-chap" is short for Chapelon - a star French locomotive designer. A contender for the title of the best steam locomotive designer in history and the writer of a classic text on steam locomotive design.

This is interesting because someone has just answered questions on Sir Nigel, and one of their questions was exactly the same.

What was more upsetting is that the contestant passed on the answer.

How did he do with respect to the other questions?

And who was it - anyone we might know? Eg. from the Gresley Society?

He was not very good. He only got 6 points.

I thought most of the questions were relatively easy.

When the programme appears on catch-up I will look at it again and let you know the questions and his name, if I can.

His was not a name I recognised and he did quite poorly. I reckon most of those on this forum would have managed 10 to 12.

Good morning all
Just crawled out after a late night.
What a great quiz!
I don't know Chapelon's partner for the Kylchap exhaust. I shall have to look that up. I would have had to pass the V2 name question as it took me a long while to work it out. I worked round all the towns in north Yorkshire area before spreading northwards.
Does anyone remember Chris Hughes, now of Eggheads, on Mastermind? He took steam locomotive subjects as his expert subjects was almost perfect.
Gotta go now and cook breakfast for my g/f.

The second set of questions seem harder. I can guess where he was working when he met his wife. I don't know the house he lived in. Somewhere in the Hadley Wood area but don't know where.
