Cowbit Station - GN & GE Joint

Post by peter simpson »

Hello.
This is my first post, having just joined... I am interested in the history of the above, as I've just bought the station building, and am in the process of renovating it. We've got past the 'why on earth have we done this' stage, and are loking forward to finishing it as a family home. During the renovation we're finding a surprising amount of originality including what I'm pretty sure is original LNER light green paint on the windows - and brown underneath, and varnish under that - would that be Great Northern perhaps? Obviously I'd be interested to see any photos 'in service' - but to date all I've found is post closure and two of it open - one by Douglas Thompson dated 1950 showing B17 Hatfield House steaming through, and one from about the same period showing a line of barrows on the platform. I also have a copy of the CT Goode book. I'm sure there must be more out there somewhere, and as we are looking to renovate outside to as original a look as possible, any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Peter

V.good, RP.

Like the first (older) one.
Assuming that lack of a remark near No. 6 Distant quoting 'Electrically' or 'Motor operated' is accurate, at "2099 yards", 6 is the first instance of a mechanical distant on BR(E), that's more than 2000 yards away (except for Hertford North, of course).

If I am correctly informed, the Southern Area of the LNER used a brown and cream colour scheme in largely GNR style on buildings until green and cream repaints were begun in the mid to late 1930s. Green and cream may have survived in some places many years into the BR period. I wonder if your base layer of varnish indicates that on the joint line there was a different pre-1923-grouping paint scheme rather than the GN version?

Thank you everyone for all your help so far - I hadn't seen the signal box diagrams before - sadly the signal box wasn't included in my purchase.. The information on paint colours is interesting too - not least as I have one small window in a slightly out-of-the way place which appears to still be in LNER cream... i Had actually seen both the photos before but the b/w image from 1969 is intersting - not least because it's helped me date the south chimney stack which I'm having rebuilt at present - it's on the 1969 photo as we took it down yesterday, but wasn't there on a c1960 photo - one of two i've seen of the station open...
