Thompson L1 LNER or not?
There seems to be a bit of a grey area where the LNER versons of the L1 are concerned, I thought that only 9000 ever carried the LNER lettering but apparently so did 9001-5 for a time. does anyone know the answer.

Re: Thompson L1 LNER or not?
According to Part 9A of 'Locomotives of the LNER', 9001/2/3 built immedietly after nationalization carried unshaded LNER, but that 9004-12 had regional prefix E applied before the number, which was put on the bunker instead of the side tanks where "BRITISH RAILWAYS" appeared in full.
Nos 69013-15 bore their new BR numbers when they were turned out, after which it was decided to number the L1's in a new sereis commencing at 67701. The earlier engines were quickly renumbered 67701-16 while in green livery. In the case of 9000-4, the new numbers were put on the bunker and LNER was replaced with the full British Railways title. The last green engines were 67717-22, 67723 onwards being in black.

Can I suggest you obtain a copy of "Yeadon’s Register of LNER locomotives Vol.16: Classes L1, V1 and V3" and "Locomotives of the LNER" published in part works by The Railway Correspondence and Travel Society - I haven't my copies to hand to quote the specific Part number which deals with the L1s.

Re: Thompson L1 LNER or not?
Paul,
Thanks for the suggestion, but I did not really want to spend £20 to answer one question. Being new to the forum I am slightly confused, the forum has an ’encyclopaedia’ which clearly states, that only 9000 ever carried the LNER livery (which is what I thought to be true also) I have also managed to get many photos of L1’s none of which show any other Loco except 9000 in LNER livery. If this is not true then why has the encyclopaedia not been amended? As no photographic evidence seems to exist of any other L1's with LNER markings, I can only assume the riddle will never be answered.

RCTS Volume 9A has a picture of 9002 in LNER livery. You cannot post here due to copyright rules . Hornby 9001 is identical other than number. There are pictures of the other Apple Green BR Locos too.
I am sure the forum will be updated when the owner has time to amend !! he is doing a good job !!

Jamie
The L1 livery was discussed on the Forum back in September in connection with the Hornby model and my comment then was:
"The first four members of the class carried LNER lettering as Nos. 9000-03.
9000 was the prototype, which Hornby have stated they will not be producing due to the number of "prototype" variations.
E9004-12, 69013-5 (all later renumbered as 67701-16) and 67717-22 were in green with BRITISH RAILWAYS on the tanks.
67723-30 appeared in lined out black.
All the above were railway-built locos.
The contractor-built locos (67731 onwards) with the modified 'drop' in the running plate ahead of the cylinders appeared only in BR lined black."
Hope that helps.

Re: Thompson L1 LNER or not?
I can confirm that 7719 & 7721 were in green with the BR logo.
These were the first two L1's to appear at Botanic Gardens. Both fitted with Westinghouse pumps and engine brakes.

Re: Thompson L1 LNER or not?
I think what may be confusing about the original L1s in LNER lined green livery is that 9000 used the traditional shaded gold transfers while 9001-3 used the Yellow Gill Sans LNER and number.
