Whistle Boards

Post by Bryan »

Does anybody have a scale drawing or dimensioned drawing of an LNER "WHISTLE " board?
Also what colours should be?

Sorry cannot help (at present) with the drawing/dimensions, but painting was as follows:

Caution and Trespass Notices, Mile Post Heads, and Gradient, Switch and Rail Boards - Ground, black with white border; letters and figures, white
Post of Above Notices - For 2 feet 6 inch above ground, black; remainder white

Thanks for that.

However all gradient boards I am familiar with are White with Black lettering.
Are these to a different company standard?

In the 1937 Specification:

Mile Post and Gradient Boards - Black letters on White ground

But you didn't ask about Gradient Boards...

No, but you did include it in your reply.

Only incidentally, since they are named in the straight copy from the 1923 Specification which I thought best to give in full to answer your question about Whistle Boards, and adding the part about the supporting posts for completeness. I checked the subsequent specifications for any changes regarding Whistle Boards and there were none that I could find.

Next time I shall know better...

I do not think I have ever seen them other than white with a black lettering. Not sure of dimensions - they may well have varied slightly because they were likely to have been local purchase - i.e. made up on site.

Thanks again for the comments.
Its just that we are adding in Whistle boards to our groups replacement programme on the NYMR.
Dimensions are the missing detail from all drawings etc seen so far.
Currently we are planning on replacing about 12 Gradient posts, first one seen above, but we have been asked if in addition we can look at installing some of the other missing boards.
That and the Summit sign, numerous wagon repairs and the odd snowplough should keep us busy for a while.
