Hi there, relevant to the Malton & Driffield Railway, does anyone have, or know the whereabouts of, any photographs of the turntable at Driffield in East Yorkshire? Thanks in advance.

The NER List of Turntables dated 1st April 1921, states that the 45Ft TT was in the Goods Yard. Whilst I used to go to Driffield during the late 1940s, I cannot recall seeing it in use, but perhaps I was there at the wrong time! Sorry, no photos.

Thanks anyway! We (the Yorkshire Wolds Railway) are trying to build up a photographic record of the line but Driffield seems to have been a poorly photographed station to say the least.

I lived in Driffield from the 40's to the 60's and I can say I never saw any sign of a turntable or pit in the goods yards. Are you talking about the station goods yard or the one near Wandsford Road?

We were always told that a turntable was located next to the Skerne Road signalbox and at one time there did seem to be a large space there as the York line curved in from the south west but again there was no real evidence. Nor can I recall seeing any photographs of any engine on a turntable at Driffield.

I used to have a lot of photographs of Driffield but mother moved house and they with their negatives were never seen again. My favourite was from 1960 when 60038 Firdaussi passed through towards Leeds.

I've never been good on the railway layout at Driffield but there was certainly a turntable there. This photo http://www.yorkshirewoldsrailway.org.uk ... ow-online/
shows a D20 which has arrived at Driffield via the M&DR and will shortly depart for Selby via Market Weighton.
Unless she ran tender first via the M&D she HAD to turn at Driffield.

Neilgow seems to have it correct - the 1890, 1910, and 1927 OS maps (e.g. http://treasurehouse.eastriding.gov.uk/ ... ?sheet=161) clearly show the turntable "behind" the signalbox. The site is now covered by a garden by the look of it.

Can't help with photos though :-(

P.S. You may need to download a couple of plugins to view the maps in the link above, click on the "home" button at the tops of the page and they're on the left.....

Sadly I have tried using that site many times but no matter how many plug ins I download it always says they are missing!

PinzaC55 - strange, I just downloaded the plug-ins and installed the applets, no problems on Firefox or IE, but there you go.

Anyway, quick and dirty crop , but here's the 1927 map in case you haven't seen it....

Nice to see confirmation a turntable did exist.

Reference the D20 62387 on a 1957 special.

You can rest assured it did not turn at Driffield, the turntable was long gone by then, it either went to Bridlington to turn or it came into Driffield tender first.

I saw a B1 on a similar excursion, photographs of the B1 running tender first can be seen in various East Yorkshire rail books, as it traverses the M&D line.

Two points to consider, the NER cabs were big and weather proof and the enginemen in those days would have been a much hardier type than those of today.

Without digging them out, my copies of the line diagrams for the M Weighton - Driffield and the Hull - Seamer. Bothe dated about 1913.
I seem to recall that neither of them showed the Turntable or even the connection to the Malton line.
Will have to get them out and check.

If you have a copy of LNER Album Vol.2 (B. Stephenson / Ian Allan) there's a Lance Brown photo on page 51 showing N8 No.76 leaving bunker first past the maltings opposite Driffield Jct. in August 1935. It's on a Malton train; the turntable siding (but not the TT itself) can be seen in the foreground along with trap points 33 and disc 32 "From Turntable Siding". The turntable had gone by 1961 (it was not shown on a signal cabin daigram of that date).

Hi all thanks for the map scan and Starbeck this is the photo you are talking about?

It seems a very strange place to put a turntable - you would think it would be more use in the goods yard? Unless it was intended to turn locos coming off the M&D bound for Hull as of the original intention with the M&D was that the junction at Driffield should face towards Hull.

Sorry, I can't help with a photo but it would be interesting to know when the turntable was removed.

My LNER Sectional Appendix, dated November 1947 refers to a 45' TT.

I suppose it might make sense if it was removed when the M&DR passenger service finished in 1950?
