Nice one, Bryan, although a more desolate place than Whitemoor on a winter's night is hard to imagine. Pleasing to think that a little bit has re-opened.

I am frequently surprised by the amount of stuff that appears on Britarch.
It is a site meant for archaeology and this comes from the latest news section, which is a trawl of an awful lot of media with a faint connection to History or Archaeology.

A couple of us Darnall lads went on loan to March and worked out of Whitemoor yard a lot.
Didn't stay long as the best entertainment at night in March was watching the level crossing gates open and shut.

That's interesting, I had heard that some 'northern blokes' had been on loan at March, but I've never found out anything verifiable. How long were you there, do you know how many men were involved and what the dates were ? What roads did you learn ?
Any information would be welcome

PS: I always found the gates at March East entertaining as well....!

I used to like the crossing gates at the North end of Ely across the fen road to Shippea Hill as far as i remember it must be the most crossing gates in the shortest road distance. I think there were three sets and about a mile further another set at Prickwillow.

The crossings are on the B1382 just north of Ely. Each crossing had it's own keeper and the gates are called for as required by the Ely North Junction signalman.
