We published a series of articles on GE signal boxes in the Great Eastern Railway Society Journal. See
www.gersociety.org.uk.
I would also recommend two books: "The Signal Box A Pictorial History & Guide to Designs" OPC ISBN 0-86093-224-0 (1998) and "A Pictorial Record of LNER Constituent Signalling" OPC ISBN 0 86093 146 3 (1983).

Paul

Micky wrote:I drew the line at some of there structures though such as Broxbourne Junction s/box an 'all brick building with a flat concrete roof' and 'truely a god awaful' structure although i believe it replaced any earlier s/box sometime around the time of WW2?. Broxbourne Junction was 'thankfully closed' and 'knocked down' in 1979 i think?.
Just a difference of opinion there, then. I liked Broxbourne Jcn!!
It opened in 1952, just after opening of the power station. The new box was located at Essex Road from it's original position on the up side at the junction points. It was done because additional points had been installed to access the power station and traffic to it meant that Essex Road (and level crossing) had to be upgraded and the signalbox then worked the crossing on a wheel, replacing the crossing keeper who lived there. It closed some time in 1982, if memory serves and control was moved to Broxbourne Stn.

Oi ! ...What's all this slagging off BJ box, it was my first - aged 7. The Bobby used to slide me up and down the polished lino floor, it was a great laugh. He also used to pull the levers out of the frame a bit and I'd pull them the rest of the way - backfired one day when he was waiting for the backlocks to clear and I pulled them off again! I used to listen in to the conversations on the omnibus phone. Afterwards it was home to watch The Monkeys and Dr Who what more could a boy want on a Saturday afternoon.
What's was wrong with BJ? All those wooden boxes they have carefully boarded up will rot away and turn to papier mache within 10 years due to the damp. BJ would have survived! Remember the Three Little Piggies - they didn't use brick for nothin' !! Beauty is only skin deep, it was agreat box. No more discusting than Stratford which was identical, n what about Ilford and all those. Someone mentioned Ware - just like BXB, Harlow and Colchester.
I revisited BJ later as a teenager, the bobby then let me do the lot, TRB everything, I luved it, I even plied him with my home made brown ale, he must have thought he had died and gone to bobby heaven. Here's some kid to cover the evening rush and BTW - here's your beer!
I was there the day they came with a low loader and look 7597 away, I remember seeing it in steam.
Everything nice gets smashed - so RIP BJ, and all the others - S.Tott must have been my all time fave.
