Eastern Region maps 1963

Two maps from the 1963 ER timetable which might be of interest are attached, if only to show what lines still existed before the Beeching closures really got going. The M&GN had gone by that time and the GC main line was under LMR control. The rest of the Eastern Region was divided into 'GN Lines' ( green on the map) and 'GE Lines' ( blue). I think that may have been the idea of the then manager Mr Fiennes.

In 1963 we moved from Palmers Green to Bush Hill Park and I had a weeks East Anglian Rover ticket to cover many of the branches shown in blue on the map, such as Buntingford, Maldon, Hunstanton, Wells and the like.

Happy days.

that second map still has Haverhill on but without the CVR line. A very time specific piece, there wasn't a lot of time between the closing of the two.

But it still shows the Maldon branch....

CVHR closed to passenger traffic 1 Jan '62 - final closure 19 Apr '65

Maldon branch closed to passenger traffic 7 Sep '64 - final closure 15 Apr '66

A narrow time-window as far as re-issue of maps goes.

Things were happening very rapidly around that time.

More interesting (and accurate) are the official system maps prepared in the Chief Civil Engineer's Department. I have some dated around this time but, since they are about 3' wide by 4', they won't quite fit on my scanner. I also have a selection of ex-timetable maps, amongst others.
