Morning all
Has there ever been published any material dealing directly with GCR coaches?
If so where would I find it.

No, there have been rumours of someone who was 'in the process' of writing one. But it's 25 years since I first heard them.

I suspect at the moment your best bet is a trawl though the online magazine article indexes (Mick Nicholson's is a good one to start with) then a trip to the Search Engine at York with some change for the photocopier.

What do you actually want to know? I have most of the infom it's just not in a form that is readily reproducible.

Essentially I am looking to find what GCR coaching stock was still in use around 1951.
Diagram #s, livery numbers and what sort of use they would have been found on if possible Bill.
This would be around Manchester et al.,

I have some info on the Manchester suburans from 54/5 which I put together over the weekend. 1951 is a bit odd since it is before the Woodhead electrification and BR Mk1s but after Dukinfield works closed and the GC stock was dispersed.
AFAIK all the main line expresses were made up of Gresley stock, I'm not sure of the locals, they could have been either GC or LNE. Certainly there are photos of GC sets at this time but not AFAIK on the Woodhead line.

GCR suburbans ran over the Woodhead line up to Glossop. In 1953 some were in carmine red while others retained LNE dark brown teak. The 'Manchester' push pull sets varied. 12-wheelers were built as trailers, but others were ex-Steam Railmotor coaches. They ran with converted ex London 8-wheel coaches, a few with clerestory roofs. I remember the ones that came up to Oldham retained LNE 'Brown' to withdrawal but carried BR Gill Sans numbers.

Foxline Pubishing publish quite a number of books that show ex-GCR coaches in daily use on branchlines out of Manchester, Stockport and Guide Bridge.

I have hopefully uploaded a couple of photos showing ex GC carriages at Guide Bridge 18.04.54. One being presumably a 12 wheel push pull carriage, E51904E. The other is E51903E.
How did the central doors operate - one leaf inwards?

Does anyone know where his negatives are now?

I wrote up the story of those GCR 12-wheel push pull driving trailers (and ex-Steam Railmotor stock) in my Delph-Oldham book, as they came up to Oldham from Guide Bridge. I have a shot of a 12-wheeler in Sheffield in the middle of a rake of Mk. I coaches! It carries BR Gill Sans numerals but it is impossible to make out if it has been repainted in BR carmine red or simply revarnished brown.
