I was looking at this earlier in the evening.I have no Yeadons but I know from the various comments made on the Forum most of you have some copies so is it worth a punt and at £599 is it good value for money?

I posted this link way back in October when it was £899.

If anyone has a spare £899.99 lying around the complete Yeadons is for sale on Flea Bay.

Unless you have the need for the maintenance and allocation histories of all the locos I would suggest that the RCTS "green" books are a economical substitute. Admittedly the photos in the Yeadons are of much better quality but the price.........

Like others here, I would say do you need all 45 books at once? If you do then the price is probably ok at £13.33 per volume. Another thing to consider, if you do need the complete set, is what dicount would a retailer give you for such a big order !!? But a quick trawl around the same site for individual volumes shows the current prices a lot lower.

I have nearly got the full set of small green books, that I have acquired through flea-bay, all for a max price of £10 each inc postage. So if you have a budget and are not in too much of a hurry....you can always save yourself a few quid.

I'm trying to build up my database of Selby loco allocations year on year and I have lots of missing years prior to 1947.From what has been said above it looks as though I would be better sourcing the green books rather than the Yeadons.I would however like to know to what depth of detail the green books go to.As an example would it be possible for someone to give me the allocation of,say,63423 as an example.

Many thanks

The RCTS 'Green' books give you, for each class, a list of those in service at Grouping plus those built after (for pre-Group company engines of course), their principal dimensions and technical data, LNER renumbering, details of later developments and rebuildings, technical details and differences in considerable depth - sometimes with specific sections such as on brakes or boilers, brief details about the BR period, general allocation and work details in considerable depth (but see below), list of applicable Diagrams, and a summary of the class similar to the details in Yeadon's Registers. There are sample photos of each class.

The Yeadon's Registers give you much less of the above but they do give specific details for each loco, including complete allocation data, and comprehensive photos selected and captioned to illustrate specific details, variations, painting differences, etc.

In short the two different series are complementary. One way to save money is to purchase second-hand or, for the Registers, seek out remaindered copies - which may be under a previous imprint such as Irwell Press or Challenger, another is to regularly check Booklaw's catalogue or website for reduced price copies - typically half-price.

In your example you would not get the allocation of 63423 in a 'Green' book, only in the relevant Register. To find all the locos allocated to Selby would require trawling through every volume to extract the information - but isn't there a website that has (or had?) all the shed allocations?

There is the web site-The Locomotive Shed Allocation- but it does not give any Selby allocations before 1948 and there are some years missing between 1948 and shed closure in 1959.Do you know of any other sites that might be able to fill in the gaps?

Not a website, but Xpress Publishing do a series titled 'Locomotive Registers (Locomotive Allocations 1950-1961)', one volume for each region of which Volume 3 is ex-LNER, ISBN 1-901-056-120. Not an answer to all your queries but should at least complete the gaps in the BR period.

Advert says it includes continuous engine allocations and transfers for the 1950s, last price advertised I saw was £15-95p - Xpress Publishing, 37 Rhyd Fadog, Caernarvon, N. Wales LL55 3HL, tel: 01286 870817, e-mail xpressbooks@btinternet.com
