Does anyone know the type of signals NER used, north of Doncaster to York? Presumably the somersault type were in use between KingsX and Arksey.

I have "A Pictorial Record of LNER Constituent Signalling" by A.A. Maclean; Oxford Publishing Co. The copy I have is dated 1983. No idea if it is in print or not. (if not, then Abebooks is probably a good place to get it?)

It has a number of pictures and diagrams of NER signals (and GNR ones). The NER Southern Division signals are described as having McKenzie & Holland finials but with NER pattern spectacle plates and signal arms.
They all appear to be lower quadrant.

The only picture I can find of the Doncaster-York stretch in the book, is a picture of York in 1937. This has multiple gantries described as being "pure NER" with the exception of two upper quadrant arms.

The book has a lot of pictures and diagrams of signals, signal boxes, rodding, etc. Also a brief history of signalling - including 19th century stuff. It might be a useful book for you to get if you're going to be creating a lot of LNER area routes?

Hi Hugh.
If you have not got a copy of "A Pictorial Record of LNER Constituent Signalling" by A.A. Maclean; Oxford Publishing Co. You could always try your local library. My local library (admittedly a city centre one) has a good selection of railway books. It certainly make research a lot cheaper.

Out of interest, I worked with A.A. "Sandy" MacLean back in the 1980s. When he retired he kindly donated his unpublished, typewritten manuscript for volume 2 - entitled "A Pictorial Survey of London & North Eastern Railway Post-Grouping Signalling" - to me. Although it doesn't contain any of the photographic material which would have appeared in the published version (which is a great pity), it is nevertheless very informative.

Was this publised? I don't think I've seen it in book lists (eg. Abebooks), but it could be another one for my wants list!

(I already have the Constituent volume)

No, it wasn't. I think Sandy had lost interest in the project (the first volume didn't sell very well), and gave the manuscript to me. So it hasn't ever seen the light of day.

It is now a well known book, but also an easy to get one.

I guess it is hard to judge volume and demand with these specialist books. From what I gather, Tatlow's "LNER Wagons" was out of print so long that demand built up. Then it was republished - perhaps with an inflated production volume. Now it is very easy to find, and I think I've even heard reports of it being discounted.

Hi, Have just joined and after nearly a year of researching St Margarets shed (64A) for my Railway project in N gauge. My father worked at the shed until it closed and he moved to Miller hill. Now that I am retired I started to build the whole shed in N gauge. I received information about a gentleman who photographed the shed when it was empty, which led me to the book "LNER sheds in Camera". I have just got a copy of the book and was excited to read that there are more pictures that he took that day. Does anyone know where they can be had, copy's would do, even digital. I would like to have them for the information they hold of everything scattered about the yard.
