Whitby Prospect Hill

As part of the research to help decide whether to enter a modelling challenge over on RMWeb I'm interested in seeing any material relating to Whitby Prospect Hill. From what I've found on fotopic from Geoff Plumbs site it looks as though the location may be small enough to fulfill the challenge criteria and provide some interest, but before i get too involved and start wading into the NERA, NRM and Kew does anyone out there perchance have a signalling diagram, other photos or any other planwork for the site.

Thanks in advance for any help offered,
Regards
Steve

Hi

not sure if this helps, but have a copy of "Railways around Whitby, Volume One:, Martin Bairstow (2008). Am afraid that there are no signal or track diagrams, but a few good images of Larpool Viaduct, and the approaches to Prospect Hill Junction:

1. K4 2-6-0 No 3442 "The Great Marquess" piloting K1 No 62055 across Larpool Viaduct, 6 March 1965, with Whitby Gas Works located by the River Esk and below the Viaduct.
2. B1 4-6-0 No 61083 passing Prospect Hill Signal Box on a run from Middlesbrough to Scaborough.
3. Ivatt 2-6-0 no 43051 approaching Prospect Hill with a Scarborough to Middlesbrough service.
4. Metro Cammell unit climbing towards Prospect Hill from Whitby Town.

Best wishes with the project

Cheers for reminding me of the Bairstow book. I think i have that, though with everything in storage at the moment it may take a while to excavate.

Working from memory but there are a couple of books by Robin Lidster on the Scarborough and Whitby Railway that have photos of Prospect Hill, both are (I think) well out of print but should be available secondhand (e.g. abebooks.com?). Some superb shots of the viaduct under construction too....

Also, British Railways Past and Present (Silver Link Publishing?) has a super shot of Prospect Hill in the 1950s IIRC....

I think there's a Scarborough Railway Society , they might be able to assist??

Edit - http://www.scarboroughrailwaysociety.org.uk/

Another edit - There are two volumes by Martin Bairstow, but not sure what photos are in Volume 2. (Can't find it in my "filing system" right now....)

OK so I have now had a bit of a better look - my filing system is better than I thought :-)

I have located my copy of "Railways around Whitby - Volume 2" by Martin Bairstow. (ISBN 1-871944-13-9, 1996)

Pages42/43 have an article on Prospect Hill Junction.

Photos of 80120 passing the signal box en route to Scarborough, August 1957; DMU passing underneath the SB with a Whitby train, 1964; interior of SB 1964.

...and a (sketched) track plan.

Oooh ta for that. I've found some material on Plumb Loco (cheers Geoff) and through Subrit and Flickr but wasn't aware of an interior shot. I'll have to see if that's the volume i have - or else as has been mentioned..... off to abe I go.

One thing worth playing with if you are looking to research a real life location for modelling - google earth..... the measure tool is rather useful ;)
