A) 29 carriages were transferred in 1926/27 from the G,E. section to the Northern Scottish Area. £815 was allotted to carry out what improvement or alteration to these vehicles.
B) Does anyone have any info about these carriages? Cos I haven't a clue. Were they from closed E.Anglian lines or what?

The GE was still a Westinghouse area so presumably the expenditure was to remove the dual braking gear. There were phases of carriage replacement in all areas but the GE had the highest proportion of 4 and 6 wheelers - were these just redundant because a new CBP had replaced them, but too good to scrap?

Watto JWE,

The GE was still a Westinghouse area so presumably the expenditure was to remove the dual braking gear.

The carriages were transferred 1927-28 so presumably if that work was done it had been done by 1929. So unfortunately that's not the right answer.

There were phases of carriage replacement in all areas but the GE had the highest proportion of 4 and 6 wheelers - were these just redundant because a new CBP had replaced them, but too good to scrap?

I suppose it could be a knock on from the Jazz Trains?

These puzzles have two elements ,Part A where I know the answer, Part B where I don't and would be most interested in what folk can tell me,

Conversion of lighting from gas to electric

There were about 60 GE six wheeled carriages transferred in all, thirds, brake thirds, composites and luggage firsts, presumably they were cascaded when new builds were made available to the GE.
The Aberdeen subbies were westinghouse braked until they were withdrawn in 1938. However the GNoS never had any gas lit coaches hence the conversions. There were some NER six wheelers transferred at about the same time, and for similar reasons.

"Conversion of lighting from gas to electric"- Unfortunately -no though this might have been done prior to or on transfer.

However thank you for

I wonder if the improvement to the carriages put any strain on the motive unit? It might have increased the Firemans load.

The carriages were fitted with steam heating.
