Sad, right enough, but it was just part of the closure of most of our railway workshops. Just consider what is left today and then what has gone, especially on the LNER system. All those time served blokes, often from generations of craftsmen, out on their ears. As an example, a vehicle builder in Eastleigh Works known to me was shown the door there in 2006 when it closed but has managed to adapt his skills so that now he refurbishes caravans. Mind you, he says they are rubbish when it comes to crashworthiness!

This was just part of the maelevolent attacks by Margaret Thatcher on the railway and miners unions for the part they played in the strikes in the early part of the twentieth century.
