Hi there. I have 2 number plates both are approx 8x18 . one is brass the other cast iron?
the numbers are LNER 2734. and LNER 3277. I would like to know what they are off , and what they could be worth?. any pointers would be appreciated.

I'm pretty new to the site and still finding my way about.

These are presumably smokebox number plates; 2734 'Cumberland' was an LNER D49 'Hunt' class 4-4-0 of 1927, it became 62734 under British Railways. 3277 was one of H.A. Ivatt's celebrated 'Atlantic' 4-4-2s, I don't know if she lived long enough to receive a BR '6'.

Present day value would be considerable I would think but wouldn't like to hazard more than that. However, if you don't want 'em I'll come and get em !

Without a photo, or even just the shape we can't really help. I can't think of any plate on locos or rolling stock that matches your description.

I doubt it, as the LNER didn't fit smokebox numberplates - these were only added after nationalisation.

I think it is generally known where all the existing locomotive nameplates are located but is there a list available of where all the existing smokebox number plates are.I have one off a Selby allocated Ivatt 4MT which used to pull our school train in the mid 50's.I would be very interested to know whether any other Selby allocated loco plates are still around.

Thank's for the reply's. I was starting to think i was being ignored. The plates are 8 inch x 18 inch approx.Oblong shape
with LNER at the top and the numbers below. They have a lip around the edge.How can i upload a picture on to this site?

The smokebox plate I have off an LMS 4MT is 22ins by 8ins.Was one standard size used or did the different regions use different sizes-the GWR were probably different as they seemed to go their own way on various things!!

One of the numbers, 2734, appears to have belonged to a J39/2 prior to 1946 when it became 4787. The number was then allocated to a D49. Could the plate you have possibly be a tender number?

As we have said before, these plates have nothing to do with locos.

LNER tender plate were all oval except those produced at Stratford which were 10 x 8 rectangles, but all the numbers (except one) were 7xxx or 8xxx.

We might be able to give more help if the OP posted photos or told us how he came by the plates.

Thankyou Bullhead, i will try that. all i am trying to do is find something out about some objects that have these .letters and numbers on.

From the colour of these I would say they were placed on the outside of a small building. They are ownership plates for some sort of plant, but what it could be I could only guess at.

These plates have never been on the outside of a building...
Please comment...I work in the hart of the area in respect of these numbers.? it just seems you have made your mind up on this matter... Please can you explain more on what they are
