I was on Amazon.uk cruising for Great Northern books and I came across a three volume series "Great Northern Engine Sheds" by Roger Griffiths and John Hooper. Can anybody tell me what these books? Are they about the sheds or what was in them? Are they worth buying?

I don't know specifically about the ones on the Great Northern sheds, but, if they are anything like the ones on the Great Eastern sheds, then they are well worth buying! I only have volume 2 of the GER ones, and it covers not only she sheds, and the buildings around them, but the track plans and the loco allocations for each shed!
Hopefully though, someone who has the 3 volumes that you are interested in will respond and let you know what they are like too.

I have got the book `Great Northern Engine Sheds Southern region` covering the southern sheds and it is very useful giving a good amount of detail and plans. If the set appeals and is a good price go for it.

I've got volumes 2 & 3 of these books. They list each shed alphabetically providing a brief history of each including track plans and photographs. They include one or two quite obscure and historic facilities as well. There are some allocation lists at various times (LNER & BR mostly) but they are not part of the basic format and are not provided for every shed.
Volume 2 has some interesting appendices covering other companies' sheds used by GN locos, lists of watering facilities and consumption figures, turntables and repair facilities etc. Volume 3 lists staff numbers and other servicing/stabling facilities.
Certainly well worth having if you have a serious interest in the GN.

The volume that I have is Vol1 and covers from Kings Cross north. The track plans are very interesting and informative. I am quite struck with the layout of Hitchin and feel that it would make good model, when time and health permit!!!!
