The LNER Encyclopedia

Kipps was one of the earliest railway works in Scotland, serving the Monkland & Kirkintilloch Rly before being taken over by the North British. Lowe ("British Steam locomotive Builders") says "the shops survived until the mid 1960s and were known latterly as 'Kipps Wagon-shop'". Unfortunately there is no clue here when the works ceased dealing with locomotives, though it probably stopped buildng locos as early as 1842.

Does anyone know roughly when it stopped repairing locos? In particular, did the North British close it at some point or did it continue into LNER days, like St Margarets works or its small works at Burntisland? I am referring to the Moss-side site and not Greenside, the Ballochney Railway's works on the site of Kipps running shed.

Any clarification welcome.

I think Don Martin book may be of help though certainly not a mainstream publication.

Article in Railway Bylines 8/07 says workshops at Kipps continued to work till 5/25 and in last year two J36 and three Y9 received general repairs.

Fascinatingly complex area of very early Scottish railway; home of last UK 0-4-0 tender locomotive, specialist cut down locomotives for low bridge and private company ex GER locomotive on mainline working among some highlights.

LNER.info to the rescue again. Thanks for the information, DOCJACOB. So the NBR kept it going, like St Margarets and Burntisland. Presumably it then became a wagon works.

For the last few years I've been writing a series of articles for my local railway society periodical. Although its prime focus is locos in the Grouping (I've built up a database) I wander off-topic a bit and, having done the private contractors, I'm now doing the railways' own workshops. I shan't say much about Kipps but I like what I do say to be accurate, and I also like to have background details that I never put into print.

If only the rest of the Big Four had websites like this.

I can't trace an article on Kipps in contents of Bylines 8/07 on-line, nor in August 07.
