Buffer Stops

Post by Colombo »

I have spent some time investigating the variety of buffer stops used by the North Eastern Railway, LNER and by BR in the North Eastern Region.
My object is to create a realistic pastiche in 4 mm scale of the BR scene. Judging by what I have found, there was a variety of types in use, with examples seemingly being re-used all over the system. Just Google buffer stops and look under images to see what I mean.

Mikes Models did make a variety of pre-grouping types, but these went out of production years ago and are now very difficult to find.

The current restricted range available from the trade does not reflect the variety of types in use, so I have started scratch building them, from photographs and images on the net.

I have found the following image. Can anybody tell me anything about it? I think it must be a very early NER survivor. It is in some trees on the route of the Alston and Haltwhistle line near Coanwood. (Photo by John Furneval)

Hello Colombo,

please excuse me, if there are faults in my E-Mail.
I am German Railway Fan, especially of buffer stops.
In 1992, I spent my holydays in England, Scotland and Wales with my family and I have seen a lot of buffer stops.
The Beamish Museum gave me some informations about the buffer stop type on the route of the Alston and Haltwhistle line near Coanwood. It is a N.E.R. buffer stop.
They send to me a photograph with a drawing of this timber and cast iron buffer. It is published in: North Eastern Record, Volume 1, Page 54, Published by the Historical Modell Railway Society

You can have a look at this modell in the Station Yard of the Bemish Museum.

In England, I bought some buffer stops Gauge O- 7mm:
1. Roundfield Engineering: very pretty ( white metall)
2. Slaters : 2 different types of the cast iron brackets ( brass)
I can sent you a photograph of the modells.

I have the following questions:
1. How can I get the photo by John Furneval as Tiff or JPEG?
2. Have you built some buffer stop in the meantime?
3. I am a collector of buffer stops in every scale and material.
I am looking for all infomations about buffer stops of the railsways: photos , postcards, drawings, books and so on.
In the German Railway gazette: Hp1 von Willy Kosak, I have published some stories about German buffer stops.
Are you interested in?

Kindly regards

Mike's Models are available from Holt Model Railways http://www.holtmodelrailways.co.uk/. Put "Mikes Models" in to the search for a list.

Klaus,

Thank you for your interest. In fact I had identified the NER buffer stop, and when I investigated further, I found that Slaters do supply the parts as a lost wax casting to build one. On my rather old Slaters Catalogue, it is listed as M4500 NE Buffer Stop.

I have managed to collect a few old kits by Mikes Models at shows and swap meets and these now adorn my layout together with a few scratch built ones. None are very accurate representations however.

When I last enquired Holts were gradually reintroducing Mikes Models, having bought the moulds and found someone to cast them. Originally Mike made a buffer stop for just about every pre-grouping and pre-nationalisation type that you could hope to find.

For a comparison of types of buffer stop track down a copy of "Fastline Films Behind the scenes" vol 4 Traffic.
This DVD includes testing to destruction of a number of types of stop by running train loads of wagons into them in 1946 in Bradford.
I have no connection with the company. I just like there films.
