Hi all, I have a question that was raised at my local railway group tonight. Why was the brake compartment of coaches recessed 1.5inches from both sides? There were many theories mentioned but no one could come with a definitive answer.
Does anyone have an answer?

This response posted in the other place you asked the question
I can only offer an educated guess, that the width reduction on brake portions was to keep the Guard's lookout (ducket) within gauge. Even though the ducket was omitted in some diagrams, the practice was well established and had been set down in the design standards of 1923.

I havn't posted anywhere else
. In practise though the insetting of 1.5inches makes the ducket rather useless as all you can see is a piece of teak if you look out of on side.
