LNER road vehicles

Post by Seagull »

Searching through a well known internet book seller's website I fell over a book called; 'A Pictorial Record of London, Midland and Scottish Road Vehicles'

I did a search for a similar publication for LNER road vehicles, but so far have come up with nothing.

Are there any books about LNER road vehicles?

All the information and pictures I have are in more general volumes. I've not seen anything specifically about the LNER.

There is no LNER equivalent to the LMS road vehicles book.

Ken Hoole did produce a small volume 'North Eastern Railway Buses, Lorries and Autocars'. The latter railway vehicles included because they had internal combustion engines.

Lawson Little produced an article in Backtrack, some time ago, which was recently re-printed in the LNER Society Journal , with different illustrations. The Society also has quite a number of road vehicle pictures taken from official negatives held at the NRM. There is not much data with these, however.

The Ken Hoole book on NER vehicles is superb, the photos alone are worth the price. I was surprised at just how extensive the NER's network was before the First World War
Author of 'The North Eastern Railway in the First World War' - now available in paperback!

Happy to help with anything relating to the railways in the First World War, just ask

Railway-owned Commercial Vehicles by SW Stevens-Stratton and WJ Aldridge, Ian Allan 1987 (and reprints) includes LNER information. LNER, Geoffrey Hughes, Malaga 1986 has a chapter which refers to them whilst LNER in Focus, J Crawley, Wharton 2001 has several official photographs and Michael Bonavia's 3 part History of the LNER, Steam Past/George Allen & Unwin 1983 has brief mentions with illustrations in parts 1 & 2. There are also some very occasional entries in the LNER Company Magazine, available on DVD through the GER Society.

Constituent company vehicles taken over by the LNER are generally covered in publications or articles relating to that company, the GER Society has published information on its own vehicles and also recently in relation to a specific Goods Depot.

Regrettably there is not the wealth of categorised information available for the LNER anywhere near comparable with that produced by the LMS Society or its members individually.

Thanks for the replies Gents.

I found the 'Railway-owned Commercial Vehicles' book very quickly - it is readily available secondhand.

The 'LNER in Focus' had me fooled for a bit, but if anyone else is looking it is "The London and North Eastern Railway in Focus" and a search does show a limited number available. I may actually have that volume, but will have to wait until I get home from work to check.

Thanks for those references 65447
