Re: Tiled maps of the NER
Thanks Eden, very interesting post. I used all 3 cameras to photograph the Whitby map - the one on my digital camera came out very well, the one on my iPhone awful, so hope the one on my 1917 Kodak came at least halfway between the two if not better!

Re: Tiled maps of the NER
The Tyne Dock map was at the south (Harton Jct) end of the island platform, on the west-facing wall. At some time, a wooden lean-to building had been added and one wall of this covered part of the map. I managed to chisel out the Tyne Dock tile in August 1971, before the fire. Unfortunately it came out in several pieces. After the local yobbos set the lean-to on fire, most of the tiles were scorched/blackened and cracked to the extent that they were no longer worth recovering (plus most were still firmly attached!). A couple of the tiles had been loosened by the heat and it was one of these which was sold at Malton. The Tyne Dock tile is here as I write.
Given the tender ages of myself and the other person involved (late teens / early 20s) and the "technology" we had available (a hammer and chisel plus goggles), it's remarkable that we got anything off the wall. The cement was just as good as the day it was put in, and as has been stated, the whole map was recessed into the brickwork, so you couldn't get under one corner and just lift the tiles.

Fascinating story!
It reminds me how, in 1979, I found this paper notice http://www.flickr.com/photos/pinzac55/3324376630/ on the wall of a bridge between Newcastle Station and the Keep. I guess it must have had a road sign fixed over it which was later taken down. I wanted to save it but couldn't think of any way to get it off the wall in one piece.

Re: Tiled maps of the NER
I have read all the pages of this intriguing topic, but there seems to be some inconsistency regarding whether or not there was a map at Malton. I was a 'regular' at the station from 1951 onwards and I cannot recall ever seeing one!

With regard to my questioning the existence of a tiled map at Malton, a fellow engine spotter [of similar vintage to myself] confirms that he also cannot recall there ever being one.

Re: Tiled maps of the NER
There was certainly one there in NER days, thc, because I have a copy of a photo showing it. When I get a minute I'll track down the owner and see if he will let me post it on here. The map was located just to the north of the present entrance doorway, but at some stage was destroyed so that the entrance could be moved a few yards north, and in later years the door was moved again, pretty ironically, to its exact former location......!thc wrote:I have read all the pages of this intriguing topic, but there seems to be some inconsistency regarding whether or not there was a map at Malton. Re: Tiled maps of the NER
Here it is. The owner, Mr John Stone of Norton, has very kindly allowed me to post it on here, but please don't reproduce it anywhere else without his permission. It isn't dated or annotated, but is very obviously Malton in the NER era. Can anybody spot any dating clues?Eden Blyth wrote:There was certainly one there in NER days, thc, because I have a copy of a photo showing it. (My apologies if this should be in the Photographs section, Richard, but I've kept it in here for the sake of continuity.)

Can't help with dating (a look at the original may help by looking at the large poster with 'York' and 'Leeds' on the right), but what a wonderful photo, and shows how yes, the stations really were covered in advertisements back then!

Re: Tiled maps of the NER
Like RLangham, I think that it is a great photo and I was struck by the number of ads on the station wall.
The date is difficult but it appears to be pre-grouping with two or three NER bill posters - a guess, about 100 years ago?
When you look closely, there are all sorts of things - a weighing machine, complete with handrails and a small weighbridge. I bet the same station trolleys would be still around in the 1960s.
Could that be a loco spring, just under the Stevens Inks ad? And what is the device just to the right of the tiled map? It looks a bit like a "What the butler saw" machine?
Many thanks for the posting, Eden.

Yes, that certainly confirms it! Thanks for that.
