The Axholme Joint Railway

Post by Solario »

I am preparing an article for the Encyclopedia about the Axholme Joint line.

I am having a little trouble finding out some information; I have listed the queries below. If anyone can help I will be very grateful. The first question is the most important.

When did the line close? (I know that the southern end of the line closed in 1956 but have no more information)

Locomotives - when the line was worked by the NER what locomotives were used and from which shed? (Selby?)

Rolling stock - what was the Sentinel livery?

Goods and service vehicles - did the AJR own any? If so, what livery was applied?

Also see my PM, but the RCTS 'Greenie' says that AJR No. 44 (Sentinel 8228) entered LNER stock and became 51915 in November 1933. Diagram 209.

This was ordered in February 1930 and painted green & cream (odd for what was numbered as an LMS carriage at the time!).

The original livery of the original 1926/7 LMS-ordered Sentinel isn't described. This was meant to be a similar design to LNER 12E and 13E. I'm assuming that it had the same livery as the other twelve that the LMS purchased at the same time?

Solario: It might have been a blip, but when I sent the PM, the email notification bounced.

Richard,

I have recently retired from work and my old (company) e-mail address is no more.

I am having a bit of fun setting up a new one, I decided to go for an Apple and things are a bit different and I am going through a learning curve with many aspects of the system and will get round to e-mail very soon. By the way, now that I have retired I do not seem to have as much time to do things - I could do to go back to work for a rest! I do have 2 articles nearly ready for the Encyclopedia though. I will let you know my new e-mail soon.

there is a very comprehensive book on the AJR out there- including line drawings of a lot of the stock and buildings, trackplans etc. I must try and remember who wrote it. bear with me!

edit:

got it: AXHOLME JOINT RAILWAY, C.W Judge. (Oakwood Press)
which itself is an update of an indentically titled work by G. Oates from the 60's. Scunthorpe central library has a copy bu that probably aint much use to you!!

Thanks for the info.

I have a copy of the Oates book and have only recently become aware of the newer publication.

The Oates book is OK but it is a rather slim volume, it was written when most of the line was still open.

I will have to try & get a copy of the more recent book.
