Darlington 'Shell Shop'

Post by Rlangham »

I thought i'd asked before but I wasn't able to find anything on search - does anyone know where the Darlington National Projectile Factory, in other words the munitions works ran by the NER during WW1 and built in 1915, was located? After the war it was used by the railway and believe it was known as the 'shell shop' for the rest of it's life - I know it was somewhere on the North Road site but would like to pinpoint exactly where.

Also trying to work out for definite if this 1918 photo of the 'Darlington North Eastern Railway Workshops' women football team is women working on the NER itself ie cleaning engines or of the munitions works, I believe the latter;

Many thanks!

According to the plans at pages 98/99 of Ken Hoole's book "North Road Locomotive Works Darlington 1863-1966" it became the No. 2 Machine Shop which was on the north side of the site at the junction of Westmoreland Street and Denmark Street.
