I was under the impression that in order to play, the clip needs online 'permission' each time, and when the expiry date is up, even a downloaded file will not play.
You might well be right about the iPlayer, but I recorded the programme direct off the TV :D

Could not agree more with giner,
It was an excellent programme delivered in a supportive rather than patronising or sneering manner.
Some wonderful real life loco shots in B&W, and colour, many of which I had never seen before.

For me the highlights were:
1/ the guy who intimated he either didn't have the time or patience to model but offered a very sincere thanks to all people who do and take their efforts to exhibitions,, a rough quote being " in a few years time when all the real steam men are no longer with us the kids of the day will only be able to look at models to get a pretty good idea of what a steam railway actually looked like. TRUE.

2/ the lady from Manchester university who described your archetypal train spotter of the 50's,,, short trousers, school blazer, cap, and Ian Allen compendium,,,, I plead guilty on all 4 charges,,,, wonderful days.

If we all sent a thankyou to BBC 4 maybe they could get Iain Rice to do a weekly series????,, now that we can't buy Model Railways Illustrated [morill] any more.

SAD :(

Ah yes, very sensible.

Sadly, I did not have the foresight to think about doing that. In fact, being the cynic that I am I expected it would be a rather sly attempt to make fun of the hobby, and I certainly did not expect so many quality archive clips.

The final shock was about 15 minutes from the end, when my cousin suddenly appeared on the screen.

That'll teach me.
John.

And a light came on in my head.

I can watch it again on catch-up and record it from there.

Did I correctly observe a colour clip of an A4 that must have been filmed in 1946 if I genuinely saw a three-figure number on the cab?

I think you did, or we both hallucinated the same thing. Someone somewhere said it was No. 31, but I haven't taken the time to check that.

If this is the one you mean, you were both hallucinating! It was only a very brief glimpse though, and the shiny surface did make it look as though there was an extra digit...

Worth watching for the A1 and 3 A4's running in one direction and the shot of the A4 Post war above, Hopefully BBC4 will have an evening devoted to A4's in the summer!

Maybe one day, these newsreel companies will wake up to the fact that they could make more money producing a series of quality DVDs comprised of just railway footage and out-takes, rather than trying to sell individual clips online at extortionate prices.

John Huntley did it with old cine film and few newsreels but there must be more sitting in vaults gathering dust somewhere. That panning shot of Lord Faringdon near the start of the BBC programme, was very good quality and there ought to be a few more minutes footage from that location, surely?

I do not remember seeing that on any commercial DVD, but if it is - can you tell me the name of the video production please?
John.
