Falsgrave gantry signal

Finally the gantry signal has arrived on the NYMR at Newbridge on Friday 14th Sept following its removal from Falsgrave sometime ago.
The Gantry is a listed structure so a new home had to be found for it and one is available at Grosmont.
The refurbishment has been funded by Invensys rail or Westinghouse Signalling as was.
The work being undertaken at Retford.

I will post some more photos later and a bit more detail.

This is excellent. Personally I'd like to see it at Scarborough, but this has got to be the next best thing. In use, and with steam on a regular basis. Lovely!

looks good .how much was it shortened by?

15ft approx. and only fitted with 3 signal post sockets.
It also looks like it will only cover movements into the sidings beyond.
There is no proposal at present to use it for control of movements on or off the Esk Valley.

thanks. it would have nearly gone over the whitby line also, come to think about it network rail possiably would not want it case they knocked it down accidently again

They didn't knock it over it was one of the big 6 renewal contractors at the time.

As for erecting the gantry across the Esk valley it would have had to have extensions inserted into the legs to cope with any possible electrification in the future.

You may laugh. But NR applies it's rules about such things, across it's network without exception! Regardless how unlikely electrification of a rural branchline is.

even more laughable i saw somewhere a proposel to electrify from the ecml to middlesbrough then on to sunderland and newcastle.slight problem sunderland to newcastle wired for 1500dc volts

Yes the extension of the Metro to Sunderland was stupid in the extreme and I am a mackem born and bred. But that's Councils for you.

They can always use EM2s between Sunderland and Newcastle.
