Ay up!
Like Graeme, my only steam memories are from the preservation era but my modelling tastes are firmly pre-War, mainly because of the variety of liveries on show.
My layout has to be set circa 1960, simply to get the variety of motive power. The 1930s on the Dorset weren't the most exciting period.....
