B17 61600 at mystery location

It is certainly true that Darlington North Road scrapyard would have had plenty of of work in hand in the late 1950s and early 1960s, as witnessed by the A5s,A8s and D49s stored withdrawn inside North Road station and at places along the Barnard Castle branch awaiting the call. However, I think that in the case of 61600 the loco was simply wrongly consigned, given that the class as a whole were cut up at Doncaster, the works usually responsible for their maintenance .There was a report quite recently in one of the railway magazines that a withdrawn B17 also reached Darlington the following year, perhaps in company with other locos correctly consigned and was also sent south to Doncaster. In those days of strict demarcation I imagine that the various works jealously guarded what they considered to be their work. Of course sheer numbers of withdrawals meant a complete revision of policies of disposal of steam locomotives in the early 1960s.

At the risk of straying somewhat off the subject, reading the above thread has reminded me of what was probably the most unusual loco which I ever saw at Doncaster. It was ex Somerset & Dorset 2-8-0 53802. It was in one of the "Plant Streams", as we used to call them, of locos entering the works. It was on its last journey to be cut up around about 1960.

Why did Doncaster scrap this loco? Its home was quite close to Swindon & it must have passed Derby en-route. As far as I know, no other locos of this class were dealt with at the Plant.

I have a photo of a couple of S&DJR 2-8-0s (numbers and date not to hand, as I'm at work!) on the scrap line at Crewe South (5B), presumably for cutting-up at Crewe Works.
