Gilling - Pickering query

Post by Bryan »

I have just acquired a copy of the land plan for the line between Gilling and Pickering dated 1865.
I noticed on the sheet showing the connection at Pickering that the line was not built as planned.
According to K Hooles book on the "The North East" in the David and Charles regional history series he states that the original intention was that the line from Gilling was to connect with the line to Whitby north of Pickering station and therefore miss out the station completly.
However the actual plan as submitted clearly shows that the line from Gilling was to connect with the Whitby line at Pickering but coming in from the North and therefore enabling a through route to Seamer instead through the station and onto the Forge valley line.
The actual line of route coming in to the station roughly across the turntable.
I intend depositing this plan in the archive at Pickering but I just wondered if this plan was known about?
