The Castles;
I make it 11 or if you include B17 Castle Hedingham its 12 the following locomotives,
Class A2/3 Sun Castle.
Class B17 Alnwick Castle.
Class B17 Ford Castle
Class B17 Lambton Castle.
Class B17 Lumley Castle.
Class B17 Raby Castle.
Class B17 Brancepath Castle.
Class B17 Naworth Castle.
Class B17 Belvoir Castle.
Class B17 Kimbolton Castle.
Class D40 Hatton Castle.
I have discounted the Essex Regiments former name Newcastle United.
Any advance on the above? Grange and Halls next.

Admitting to an edit missed Ford Castle.

I agreed with your 10 castles, but I missed Suncastle.
Add 2817, Ford Castle. That makes 11.

Can anybody beat 5 kings? (Locomotives only)

Well, in addition to 52D's list, here's what I could garner from the battered pages of my old Ian Allan ABC, Summer 1957 Edition.

B17/6 61610 Honingham Hall
B17/6 61611 Raynham Hall
B17/6 61612 Houghton Hall
B17/6 61613 Woodbastwick Hall
B2 61614 Castle Hedingham
B2 61615 Culford Hall
B2 61617 Ford Castle
B17/6 61619 Welbeck Abbey (I included this one because there are nine GW Castle Class locos. named for Abbeys: 5083, 5084, 5085, 5087-5092)
B17/6 61627 Aske Hall
B17/1 61631 Serlby Hall
B17/6 61636 Harlaxton Manor
B17/1 61637 Thorpe Hall
B17/6 61638 Melton Hall
B17/6 61640 Somerleyton Hall
B17/6 61641 Gayton Hall
B17/6 61642 Kilverstone Hall
B2 61644 Earlham Hall
B17/1 61647 Helmingham Hall

Now, the thing is, our friend 52D mentioned a Lumley Castle. Somehow that name rings a bell with me but it's not listed in this here old book.

As for Granges, there's Bugger 'All - erm . . . That wasn't really a GWR name either as far as I can recall.

Uh Oh, now I find this . . .
http://steamingback.fotopic.net/p46982583.html

Seems the LMS inherited its share of Castles as well. Is there no end to this stuff?

I can add a few.
The 2 Kings which I found are -

D9 5110 King George V
C5 5259 King Edward VII

Another Hall is -

B17 2839 Rendlesham Hall (later renamed Norwich City)

There are 36 D49 Counties plus a dubious Sentinel railcar 2133 Cleveland (the county did not exist when this was operating).

The 9 Saints (2 dubious) are -

C10 9873 Saint Mungo
C10 9901 St Johnstown
J36 605 St Quentin (a dubious one, not sure whether it made LNER stock)
A3 4481/60112 St Simon
A3 2572/60073 St Gatien
A3 2574/60075 St Frusquin
A1 60145 Saint Mungo (repeat of C10 9873)
A1 60162 Saint Johnstoun (similar to C10 9901 but different spelling)
V2 4818 St Peter's School York (is this allowed?)

According to Casserley and Johnston, and also Yeadon, J36 St Quentin was included in LNER stock at the Grouping.

A1s St Johnstoun and St Mungo were both built after Nationalisation and not named until 1951 and 1950 respectively.

If you allow V2 St Peter's School, I suggest that you must also allow King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.

Don't forget B17 Derby County.

Yes, I was getting too ambitious with the A1s.

If KOYLI is acceptable then what about the other 4 V2s with a county in the name? I think that at least one was not named until the 1950s though (The Snapper).

Yes, I have to acknowledge that the V2s name Yorkshire three times and then there is also a Durham School (1939) for Co. Durham. We have one loco that is a both Saint and a County. Can it count twice?

The Snapper was named in 1937; Durham Light Infantry, not till 1958.

These perhaps do not qualify, but I noticed the following:

If you consider that a King is a Royal Sovereign, then you can add a B17 and a Sentinel.

Our Kings were also King Emperor's of India. But if you allow Emperors that lets in one more, because was not D16 "Frederick the Great" briefly named after an Emperor of Prussia in 1933 in tribute to the legendary Fred V. Russell designer of the Clauds.

I dont understand how i missed Ford Castle its quite famous for paintings by the lady of the Manor (Louisa Marchioness of Waterford) at the time, using locals as models. I visited it on a school field trip.

Lumley Castle scrapped march 1953 in reply to giner.

In deference to Colombo perhaps we should have included how many schools did the LNER own.

Had anybody spotted B17 2805 Lincolnshire Regiment and 2845 The Suffolk Regiment

D11 6401 James FitzJames was King James of Scotland travelling incognito.

What about Sentinel 310 Prince Regent? He was acting for his Dad who was mentally incapacitated? (Porphyria or something). He was to all intents and purposes a King.

Then there was Sentinel 238 Yorkshire Huzzar.

I thought i should reopen this thread with a new twist, how many ex LNER names are in use on modern locos i can only think of the two class 66 which carry on B17 names.
Sunderland B17 No 61654 becomes class 66 No 66725 and Sheffield Wednesday B17 No 61661 becomes class 66 No 66726
