Re: Gateshead Railways
Excellent cameo of opening dates and in the flowery language of the day descriptions of the various ceremonies. This is however not the full history of Gateshead and the railways, there is a lot more to tell of the history of loco building and repairs which took place in the town and employed a large proportion of the population. There was resentment against the North Eastern Railway when the vast majority of this work was moved to Darlington causing unemployment in the town.

Re: Gateshead Railways
Agreed 52A - its quite an extensive site when you get into it.
A year ago I lobbied Gateshead Council to erect a blue heritage plaque on Sir Vincent Raven's former house which still exisits and on the former railway club lecture rooms but to no avail, I was just fobbed off with waffle even after offering to pay for the work myself.
They would rather honour dubious politicians and leftist worthies than someone who was a giant in the railway world of Gateshead.
