Mickey wrote: Sat Jul 24, 2021 8:38 pm From memory these were the light engine headcodes that were used on the Kings Cross area and along the main line to Doncaster and to Cambridge on the Cambridge branch. I presume they were introduced by B.R. during the transition era from steam to diesel possibly in 1963-1964 and lasted until either the end of the 1970s or 1980s?.

1.0B01 Kings Cross passenger loco
2.0B02 Finsbury Park MPD
3.0B03 Hornsey
4.0B04 Hatfield
5.0B05 Hitchin
6.0B06 Peterborough
7.0D01 Doncaster
8.0C01 Stratford MPD
9.0C02 Temple Mills

By the late 1960s & early 1970s mostly seen were 0B01 0B02 & 0B050
The "INSTRUCTIONS RELATING TO THE GENERAL APPENDIX" section of the BR30015/1, ER 1972 S. Appdx. has an item "FOUR-CHARACTER TRAIN IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM", which includes 33 light engine codes for the Region Mickey.

0B01 is only listed as "King's Cross" (i.e. not Passenger Loco, though most must've been for there of course),
0B02 is actually listed as "Clarence Yard" ! ,
0B03 & 0B04 aren't in the list by then,
0B07 was "Cambridge" ! :) ,
the only "0Cxx's" were 0C01 and 0C02 ; - respectively Stratford and Temple Mills.

I thought 0B07 was the light engine headcode for Cambridge I probably read it in somewhere (probably in the General Appendix) but the chances of a light engine running from Kings Cross or Finsbury Park to Cambridge would have been a very rare happening although maybe a light engine originating from Hitchin and then running across the branch to Cambridge was maybe more likely.

Thanks for that info Stevie.

Excellent to wrap the 0B07 question up, thanks StevieG.

Which leaves that matter of the Baby Deltic at Hitchin. "Oh Coo" - perhaps it had worked a Pigeon train, ha ha. Seriously, apart from the destinations listed, 0C00 must have still existed and been used for all those destinations that weren't defined.

Yes, I remember that method of getting people to the phone (you jogged my memory, Mickey, I had completely forgotten) - presumably it was used when they didn't respond to the bell code on the omnibus circuit.
